Baby Cakes

Event-planner Pamela phoned me on Tuesday in need of a Superfine cake and two coordinated "smash" cakes for her twins' first birthday. Of course we were happy to oblige!

The cake design was based on the ball-themed party invitation, pictured here (faces of the birthday babies have been hidden to protect the innocent!):

It's always great when a client can provide inspiration like this for us cake makers to riff off of. The best part was I could take this theme and inject a little dimension into it on the cake. I added circle cuts into the side, stacked a few circles and design elements, plus I added a little action to each tier by adding a graphic of a ball bouncing its way around each tier.

This cake presented some technical challenges (Physics 101: Would a ball really bounce in that kind of an arc?), but all in all it was great fun to work on. I'm starting to get a lot of requests for this tart shade of pale yellow these days...somebody call Trend Watch!

Thanks Pamela and happy birthday to E. and S.!

P.S. I'd also like to take a moment and send a big Thank you to Anna, Sibylle, and Julie C. for ordering Fleur de Sel caramels from our new shop on Etsy! Anna's wedding guests will be enjoying them in Key Largo, and Sibylle and Julie C. will be spoiling themselves at the office. Enjoy ladies!

Andrea
